A restaurant just over the Powys border has been named the second best in the UK.

SquareMeal have released their annual list of the top 100 restaurants in the UK, and it's a place just a short drive over the Cereidgion-Powys border near Machynlleth that stars high on the list.

Ynyshir, in Eglwys Fach, was named the second-best restaurant in the country by SquareMeal.

Recognising the excellence of the restaurant, which is just a short 5-mile drive west of Machynlleth, SquareMeal said: “Gareth Ward’s incredible mastery of live-fire cooking has secured him two Michelin stars at his Welsh restaurant.

“A completely unique Japanese-leaning menu guarantees plates full of personality, the likes of which you’ve never tasted before.”

Eight Welsh restaurants made the list overall, including Ynyshir.
