A Newtown man who caused a vulnerable teenager to engage with a sexual act without consent was jailed for seven years for the offences.

Justin Jarman, 31, was found guilty by a jury of three counts of the offence at a trial in November, and sentenced for his actions shortly before Christmas last year.

Mold Crown Court heard on Monday, December 20, at his sentencing hearing that Jarman's actions had left the victim "really embarrassed and ashamed". His victim also described him as a "very sick man".

"I can’t go out," his victim said in a statement read in court. "I’m constantly looking around me. I’ve had to take time off school. I worry what will happen in future. I don’t feel safe.

"After this happened I started burning and cutting myself because I was angry and stressed and made me felt in control.

"After what he’s done to me. I can’t trust him and he took advantage of my vulnerability."

The court heard that Jarman had invited his victim to go hunting with him, but during the night came downstairs at the lodge they were sharing and invited him to check on the dogs in the shed outside.

But sentencing, Judge Rowlands said this was a "ruse" to lure him out of the house and abuse him.

Judge Rowlands said there had been "compelling" scientific evidence against Jarman who continues to deny any sexual contact with the victim.

The court heard that Jarman, of Cledan, Treowen, had 15 previous convictions "but nothing like this".

Myles Wilson, defending, said Jarman had "sorted himself out in his early twenties after a shaky start" and that the sexual act in late October 2019 was "very much an isolated event".

The Judge said he had read a number of testimonials, including Jarman's parents and former employer who described him as "hard working".

Jarman was given a seven-year sentence for count two, a seven-year concurrent sentence for count three, and a two-year concurrent sentence for count one of the charges.
