Long-awaited renovations are underway at a 19th century church located in a Powys village.

Churchgoers to the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Carno are celebrating the renovation work finally beginning on February 14.

The project is scheduled to be completed within three months, at the end of May 2022.

The renovations are being carried out by local building contractor Keith Breese and under the direction of chartered architect Charles Cowan, of Llanidloes.

The work includes wall stabilisation and a complete internal redecoration.

Church wardens Polly Walker and Linda Rollin said, “We are particularly grateful to the local people of Carno and roundabout for their ongoing generosity and support, which has helped get the project off the ground.

“The church also extends its grateful thanks to several organisations for the generous grants received, amounting to £28,000.”

Grants have been received from Carno Community Trust Fund, the Vronhaul Charity, the Ashley family Foundation, All Churches Trust Ltd, the Diocese of Bangor, National Churches Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Weekly services are being held in the church room, while the sale of books, DVD’s and CD’s in the church porch has been temporarily suspended while work is underway.

Donations of items from the public are still accepted by the church and can be deposited for sale at the church’s monthly teas and toast events in Carno Community Centre.
