COBRA Rugby Club continue to enjoy a stellar season.

The Meifod based club have hit the ground running since the resumption of competitive rugby following the easing of social distancing restrictions with the first team currently fourth in the first division ahead of this weekend’s trip to bottom of the table Bro Ffestiniog.

Meanwhile the club’s women’s side have also enjoyed a superb campaign and will begin their national league campaign with a trip to Caernarfon on Sunday having secured their place on the back of an impressive winter.

Coach Rhodri Davies said: “We’ve been able to give debuts to a lot of new recruits this season showing the team is growing. We’re all very excited about the challenges that lie ahead in the second half of the season.”

Chairman Alun Pryce added: “With young players also coming through the Rebels system, the future remains bright at COBRA Ladies. We as a club are very proud of our ladies team and what they’ve achieved over the past few years.

“Since they formed six years ago under the great leadership of Rhodri Davies, they’ve become a force to be reckoned with. With a squad of 40 odd players and keeps increasing, it’s a testament to the coaching staff and players.”

The club’s future is also in safe hands with two of their members, Will Lydford and Iestyn Pryce, selected for the prestigious Crawshays Rugby Club last week.

The COBRA pair helped the club beat the English side Lambs XV 23-5 at Abergavenny Rugby Club.

They are mainly a touring team who play fast entertaining rugby.

It is regarded an honour to be invited to play for such a prestigious team. They are usually, a mix of seasoned internationals, and promising youngsters, with the occasional local player available at short notice.

Many Wales rugby legends have played for them, including JPR Williams, Phil Bennett and Jonathan Davies.

A club spokesman said: “It is fantastic to have lads from mid Wales representing the historic Crawshays Welsh who this year are celebrating their centurion year. Over the years they’ve had some of the Welsh greats put on the jersey such as JPR Williams, Allan Bateman and Shane Williams.”
