A LEVEL crossing in Powys was closed for around an hour this morning (January 27).

A faulty barrier was believed to be the cause of the issue at the level crossing in Buttington, near Welshpool, causing delays to motorists.

Network Rail said the fault was caused by a temporary barrier becoming wedged under the normal barrier. They are looking into the matter.

“It was reported just after 6am that the barrier was stuck,” said a Network Rail spokesperson.

“Police and Network Rail attended the site and saw that a temporary barrier was wedged under the normal barrier which caused it to be stuck.

“The temporary barrier was removed, and the level crossing reset and then returned to normal working order – this is in our logs for 7.13am.

“Overall, there was just more than an hour of traffic delays to motorists, and we are looking into why a temporary barrier was there in the first place.”

Dyfed Powys Police said the crossing was back open at around 7.10am.

“The level crossing in Buttington, Welshpool, is currently not working and traffic is not able to pass,” the force tweeted at 6.23am.

“Please find an alternative route until this is resolved. Thank you for your patience.”

Police confirmed later that a barrier was not working properly.
