A BMW driver has escaped with six points and a fine after he was clocked speeding at almost 100 miles per hour on the Newtown bypass.
James Paul Sweeney, 37, was recorded travelling at 93mph – more than 30 miles over the speed limit – on the stretch of road above Newtown on July 3 last year.
His case was held at Llanelli Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, January 19. Sweeney, of Hinckley Road, Sapcote, Leicestershire, was not present to hear he’d been fined a total of £412 with six points placed on his licence.
The offence happened at 2.30pm on July 3, with the defendant driving his BMW 530 D M Sport Auto on the eastern section of the bypass, where the speed limit is 60mph.
Sweeney, who had entered a guilty plea by post, was fined £288 and ordered to pay £90 costs and a £34 surcharge – in addition to the points on his licence.
A further charge of failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver was withdrawn.
