A pothole-infested town centre car park will close for up to two months to allow resurfacing work to take place.

Motorists will not be able to use the Gas Street car park in Newtown when work begins on Monday, January 24.

Powys County Council, who own the pay-and-display car park, said Gas Street car park will be closed for around eight weeks.

Councillor Joy Jones (Newtown East - Action for Powys) said she was relieved that work was finally going ahead.

"After many many years of asking, Gas Street car park is to get resurfaced," she said.

"Once completed it will become a short stay carpark due to Highways felt it will benefit the town after the loss of the one by the Ladywell Shopping Centre.

"It will be a relief to see all the large potholes filled as I was begining to worry if someone falls into one of them, they might never been seen again."

Powys County Council said there will be no road closures in place however, for up to three weeks, motorists will not be allowed to enter Gravel car park from the Post Office side in Shortbridge Street.

"Whilst working on the junction, a one-way system will be in operation," a spokeswoman added. "It will all be fully signposted."

"Access from McDonalds and out of the Gas Street junction will be allowed. No entry turning in from the Post Office side. This will only be during the works on the junction which is expected to take two to three weeks.

"Traffic will go back to normal through Gravel car park when the kerbing and surfacing works are taking place in Gas Street car park."

The nearest pay-and-display car park is the Gravel car park which will remain open during the works in Gas Street.
