A BUYER has been found for a Llanfyllin car parts factory that faced closure last year.

Marrill Group Limited announced via its Twitter page that they have purchased the Llanfyllin factory from Stadco Limited.

Located in Coventry and Gateshead, Marrill Limited is a company that specialises in metal pressing and component manufacture.

Established in 1964, it supplies pressed metal and fabricated parts from its two existing locations.

Details about the company's plans remain under wraps, including how it will impact jobs in the town, but the news has been welcomed locally.

The purchase comes after months worth of efforts to save the Stadco factory from closure following an announcement by the company in September 2020 in which they first revealed their plans to close.

The ensuing discussions regarding the future of the factory brought input from multiple figures within the Welsh government.

Ken Skates, Wales’ economy and transport minister, said: “It is vital because 129 jobs within a community as small as Llanfyllin is like a 1,000 jobs in a community as large as a small city or a major town.

"It's vitally important that we do what we can to retain those jobs, if it can be achieved.”

Montgomeryshire MS George Russell also weight in on the issue, saying: "Stadco is just too important a company in north Powys to allow it to close without making every effort to find a workable solution."

Later in 2020, union chiefs from Unite Wales stated that there were as many as four potential buyers to save the site from closure.

The union called upon all stakeholders in the Welsh Automotive Forum, and the Welsh Government to fully support a potential takeover process in order to secure future employment for its members.

In his New year’s speech, mayor Peter Lewis addressed the development of the Stadco factory, saying: “As we entered 2021 there was a shadow of doubt over the future of Stadco which is one of Llanfyllin’s biggest employers.

“Closure would have been devastating for the town, however with a lot of hard work, a new owner with Welsh Government funding it has finally been saved.”

Both companies have so far not responded to requests for comment.
