A MASS vaccination clinic in Newtown which seen more than a quarter-of-a-million jabs given will close next month with the operation expected to be scaled down.

The year-long partnership between Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) and Freedom Leisure, which has given up its Malwayn Leisure Centre in Newtown for vaccinations, will come to an end in February when it closes.

The operation will revert back to a smaller premises in Park Street, where the North Powys vaccine programme started in December 2020, now most adults have received a booster jab.

Adrian Osborne, programme director for Covid-19 vaccination and Test Trace Protect at PTHB, thanked the leisure company for their help and support.

"The progress on Covid-19 vaccination in Powys would simply not have been possible without the support of Freedom Leisure," he said.

"Its team at Maldwyn has provided amazing supported for the programme and I know our teams will miss each other given the friendships they have forged.

"Our centre at Maldwyn has delivered nearly 125,000 doses, offering vital protection and saving lives.

"Only venues the size of Maldwyn can deliver at the unprecedented scale we have needed over the last 13 months.

"No the majority of adults have received their boosters, this means we are able to step down to a smaller building for the next phase of the programme and we will be returning to our previous venue ion Park Street, in Newtown.

"Please do check your invitation letter for the location of your Covid-19 vaccination as the Newtown centre will be moving in February.

"Vaccination continues to offer vital protection, reducing the risk of seriousness illness and death from covid-19 – Powys has the rates of vaccination of all health boards in Wales.

"This is only possible because of the amazing people of Powys taking up the offer and the team of staff and volunteers delivering the programme."
