Concerns have been raised about small silver-coloured canisters that have been found in a Powys town.

Police officers will be patrolling the streets of Builth Wells tomorrow (Wednesday, January 12) following reports that people have been disposing empty canisters of nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide, also known as 'laughing gas' or 'nos', is a colourless gas sold in small silver-coloured canisters and most commonly inhaled through balloons.

Users are most prevalent in young people and adults aged 16 to 24, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Police officers will be working alongside partners, including Powys County Council youth workers and substance abuse charity CAIS, to raise further awareness of the dangers of inhaling the substance.

The risks

While the canisters and dispensers can be bought and owned legally in the UK for other purposes - such as baking - it is classed as a psychoactive substance, and anyone involved in its supply and distribution for this purpose can be prosecuted.

Prolonged use of nitrous oxide can cause vitamin B12 deficiency, anaemia and nerve damage.

Dyfed-Powys Police said: "Due to the recent reports of Nitrous Oxide cannisters being found in Builth Wells, there is a joint patrol around the town the afternoon of 12/01/2022 with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, CAIS and Powys Youth Workers to engage with youths and anyone who has concerns regarding drug use in the area.
