Another 401 new Covid cases have been confirmed in Powys as the rate of new infections remains at a high level.

The latest triple-figure update continues more than a week of spiralling infection rates as Powys continues to see high numbers of new cases amid the spread of the Omicron variant.

The figures, released on Monday, January 10, cover the 48-hour period between 9am on Friday and 9am on Sunday.

While they remain high, the latest numbers show an improvement on the early part of last week.

Last Tuesday the 48-hour figures stood at 656, and on Wednesday the number was 690 – although this may have been impacted by a lag from the bank holiday on Monday January 3.

A total of 21,564 positive tests have now been returned in Powys since the beginning of the pandemic, and the infection rate over the last week is as high as it has ever been.

On a rolling seven-day basis, the current infection rate stands at 1,668.4 per 100,000 residents.

Over the course of the pandemic, 16,282 people per 100,000 – or about one in six people – have returned positive Covid tests.

The total rate for Wales as a whole is higher at 21,937.1 people per 100,000 having tested positive for Covid. That figure is based on more than 691,000 people testing positive throughout the pandemic.

Sadly, a further 16 people who had tested Covid positive in the last 28 days died in Wales in the 48-hour reporting period. This takes Wales' total number of confirmed suspected Covid-related deaths to 6,650.

Over 1.7 million people in Wales have now had a Covid booster jab.
