THE threat of Covid-19 and effect of streaming giants has been cited after a film club in Llanfyllin announced it was to halt screenings.

Zarena Allen, organiser of Ffilm Llanfyllin, a social club for residents in the area to gather for local screenings of films, said the ongoing pandemic and influence of streaming platforms had meant the film club was to take a break.

Ms Allen admitted she will be sad to not put on the nights for the near-future, but said it had fallen prey to a change in viewing habits and Covid-19.

The club had recently closed, albeit temporarily, after confusion over whether Welsh Government rules over Covid passes had to be implemented.

She said: “I personally will miss the lovely communal experience of watching a film in a room with other people.

“But it seems I am among a small minority of people.

“It seems the threat of Covid and the streaming giants have well and truly taken over our entertainment habits.”

Ms Allen made the announcement on Friday that the film night, usually held at the Public Institute, in the High Street, will be coming to an end but hopes someone may be able to pick up the mantle.

She added: “There was apparently little interest and poor attendance at the meetings over the past season, with a small number of people regularly appearing at the film screenings.

“The low attendance has been deemed inadequate to sustain the costs involved in getting the license to screen each film.

“I have enjoyed the six years of helping to run the film society, since the previous committee who ran at the High School decided to stop, back in 2015.

“I do hope it will be able to continue in some form or other.

“Losing all the other committee members over the years has made things difficult.”
