A TRADE union has made several donations of £500 to charities and organisations as recognition for groups who have helped their communities.

Trade Union Unite has made donations to foodbanks in Welshpool, Newtown, Llanidloes and Machynlleth.

Donations were also made to groups such as the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals and Powys Pets in Need, two charities which provide free, low-cost treatment to pets in need.

The Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre, which gives support and services to those experiencing or affected by domestic abuse. Their resources include a wide range of outreach programmes for men, women and children.

Harry Sillitoe, chair of Unite in Mid Wales, said: “At this time of the year we feel we need to stand with our community and support some of the organisations who are there for us all, all year round.

“We would rather there was no need for foodbanks at all, but with Universal Credit, any of us can be a in position where we need help and there is no shame in asking for help when we need it. We are glad to financially support the hard work that these volunteers do in our community.”

Mr Sillitoe also emphasised the importance of the pet charities that received donations, adding: “We know that by feeding pets we are freeing up cash to feed the family.

“Trade Unions offer solidarity to members, and we work in our community all year round, but this is the season to put a bit extra back into supporting our community and showing some festive solidarity.”
