LITTER collected from the roadsides of Montgomeryshire is to go on permanent display in Welshpool – in the form of a striking new artwork.

On Friday, December 3, Russell George MS joined Welshpool Mayor Alison Davies in unveiling a display created by the Powys art group Celf-Able.

Celf-Able, an art group run by disability artists throughout Montgomeryshire, made the piece for the market hall, called ‘Litter-Arty’, entirely from litter collected by the group.

The project was funded by a grant from the Ashley Family Foundation, via Community Foundation Wales. The group also received support from Powys County Council waste awareness team, Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust and Siawns Teg.

Russell George called the finished piece “fantastic”, adding: “The artworks Celf-Able have created are colourful and thought provoking.

"I know that they have focussed particularly on our natural environment, the elements and the impact that climate change is having on our nation. I am sure the art will help to convey the messages they are passionate about.”

Celf-Able carried out litter picks in Machynlleth, Newtown, Welshpool, Llanfair Caereinon and Llanidloes to collect materials for the project.

The group’s statement on the finished piece said: “The artwork is on the theme of ‘the elements’, to highlight how the climate crisis affects us in our local communities, as well as the global impacts. The Artboards are made of recycled materials and have been decorated to represent Earth/Air/Fire/Water.”

The artwork will remain on display at Welshpool until January when it will begin a five month tour of Montgomeryshire before returning to the Town Market hall as its permanent home.

Welshpool Mayor Alison Davies said: “I am delighted to visit today and hugely impressed with the works Celf-Able has created.

“I realise that the process of how and why the art works have come to be developed; consideration of our planet and how we care for it – or don’t – is probably more important than the finished works.

"However, we are thrilled it is starting the tour of Montgomeryshire here and Celf-Able has agreed that Welshpool Town Hall can be the permanent home once the tour is completed.”

Project co-ordinator Amanda Wells and Celf-Able Chair Sue Patch estimated that at least 240 hours of work had gone into the project.

Despite just finishing a large project, Celf-Able are already well underway in planning another environmental themed piece.
