The Cambrian Wildwood project is aiming to raise £15,000 in one week to increase its work restoring nature.

The announcement comes in the wake of the UN’s COP26 climate summit, encouraging renewed efforts to contribute to the fight against climate change and protecting the environment.

Cambrian Wildwood is restoring the landscape at Bwlch Corog, Machynlleth, a 350 acre moorland that contains 10 acres of ancient Celtic forest.

The project has been selected for the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2021. From November 30 to December 7 all donations to participating charities will be doubled.

“We have ambitious plans for boosting our vital work for nature and for people”, said Cambrian Willwood Project Director Simon Ayres.

He added, “Every donation to us through this challenge will be doubled, which means double the impact. We’re urging people to give what they can to help us create a positive and long lasting change for people and nature.”

Like many projects, restoration was disrupted by the Covid-19 Pandemic. However it has now resumed with steps forward such as the planting of 2000 native trees, rewetting of peatland and bog, and the introduction of wild horses which allow wildflowers and plants to flourish via grazing.

The projects activities with people have also seen a resurgence in recent months. This has included a week long wild living camp for young carers living in Powys and Open Door Camps for held vulnerable adults who face a variety of challenges in their daily lives. Volunteer workdays are also open.

During the autumn, three primary schools visited Bwlch Corog, a trip that was, for many pupils, their first since the pandemic.

“During the pandemic, some found solace in nature, but that past 18 months have been extremely difficult for many people. We want to ensure what we do here at Bwlch Corog offers people the chance to thrive and benefit from wild spaces,” said Clarisaa Richards, Cambrian Wildwood’s Education Specialist.

She added, “It’s increasingly recognised that connecting people with wildlife and wild places is fundamental to maintaining and good physical and mental health.”
