WELSHPOOL became home to Montgomeryshire's first ever micropub two months ago.

The Old Bakehouse offers locally sourced real ale, traditional cider, craft ales, wines and a small selection of Welsh spirits.

The aim of this micro pub is to be a small bar selling traditional drinks in a traditional way with no TV’s, fruit machines or jukebox and just good old fashioned conversation.

The emphasis is to sell local and Welsh products to drink on the premises or take home and enjoy.

There is also a smart, enclosed outside drinking area and upstairs room with tables, a comfortable sofa and a selection of books

A pub spokesman said: "Our products are sourced from small brewers and producers only. We aim to support these small companies rather than large multinationals.

"In the first five weeks the response has been overwhelming.

"We have a wide range of customers from all walks of life who have come together to enjoy high quality ale."

The pub is built on the site of a former bakery and renovated over the past 18 months.

However the history of the site goes back even further with the pub standing near to the the former route of the Llanfair Caereinion-Welshpool Light Railway where the line crossed the town to connect with the standard gauge railway at Welshpool Station.

While the sight of the railway through the heart of the town ended in the 1950s, the Old Bakehouse has brought life to a corner of town and a semblance of how our ancestors once enjoyed a pint.
