A HUGE £5,000 prize is up for grabs for anyone who can write a musical based on Powys.

The Llanbrynmair Prize Committee (Pwyllgor Gwobr Llanbrynmair), which is a sub-committee of the Powys Provincial Eisteddfod, is keen to sponsor a musical and is putting forward a £5,000 prize for anyone who writes a script and score for such a venture. It is hoped that the musical will be performed by a professional or amateur company.

The musical has to be rooted in Powys (Powys being in this instance the traditional medieval area that is now Montgomeryshire, Denbighshire and parts of Meironnydd). The subject matter will also have to do with this area and deal with legends, events or historical figures associated with this part of Wales. The composition must also be in Welsh.

Dafydd Morgan Lewis, of the Llanbrynmair Committee, said: “We have recently sponsored a book by Penri Roberts of Llanidloes, titled 'Prydlondeb a Ffyddlondeb/Hanes Cwmni Theatr Maldwyn 1981-2021', which is the history of a Montgomeryshire Youth Theatre that gave us such impressive productions as 'Y Mab Darogan' and Pum Diwrnod o Ryddid'. Other books that are yet to be published are to be supported by the committee.

“This is the first time that the committee has considered supporting a musical.”
