SOME our our pubs are older than our castles.
Yet while castles are protected buildings and their histories poured over by academics, more often than not the histories of our pubs, inns and taverns are left to local folklore.
Ahead of Hallowe'en, the County Times shares five supposedly haunted Powys pubs and hotels and the stories behind their apparent paranormal activity.

Llangedwyn's haunted pub
The Green Inn in Llangedwyn has several ghosts and considering its history it could well be the spectral playground of several ghosts.
It is said criminals were hanged nearby and their bodies were transported to the graveyard on a wagon.
Chillingly a horse and cart has sometimes been reported to have been seen outside the inn.
A figure has also been seen at the top of the stairs near the restaurant area - the figure would have had to walk through a wall, where a door was once located.
This may be the same spectre seen nearby and described as wearing a flat cap and tweed.
The Lady in Green is also to be seen here, coming through the cocktail bar into the restaurant.
Banging noises have been heard coming from an upstairs room - the alarm has also been triggered too. One time, noisy footsteps were heard coming up the stairs.

The friendly ghost of Llanelwedd
LITTLE is generally known of the ghost apart from he or she is reported to call the Llanelwedd Arms Hotel in Builth Wells home.
Witness accounts are wholly positive and describe the spirit as a friendly entity.

Machynlleth's haunted hotel
While never a pub the hotel has long provided shelter to travellers.
Some are said to have never left.
The poet Llywarch Hen is rumoured to haunt Plas Dolguog Hotel.
If that was not enough a cheerful male spirit named Charles with an injured leg has also been seen on the staircase, along with a female spirit known as Mary who frequents a rocking chair in the parlour room.

The ghost of Knighton's George and Dragon Inn.
IT is believed the inn had been haunted by the spirit of a woman who lost her baby for many years.
However paranormal activity decreased after 2005 and attributed to a new owner taking over the establishment.

Howey pub's Victorian apparitions
A previous resident claimed to have experienced furniture moved by an unseen hand, as well as seeing a young boy resembling Dickensian street urchin.
Another witness has seen a lady in Victorian dress sat knitting in a rocking chair.
