Newtown 1 Caernarfon Town 0

NEWTOWN kept pace at the top of the JD Cymru Premier with a comfortable home win over Caernarfon Town tonight.

Despite the scoreline the Robins totally dominated the match with Lufumpa Mwande's first-half injury time goal proving the difference.

Mike Hayes' low 20 yard shot was saved by home goalkeeper Dave Jones inside the opening 10 minutes while Aaron Williams' weak long range shot failed to test goalkeeper Jakub Ojrzynski at the other end as both sides probed early on.

Iwan Cartwright glanced a headed effort just over the bar from Gruffydd Williams' right wing free-kick after quarter of an hour.

Newtown's best chance came on 22 minutes when Noah Edwards was dispossessed on the edge of his own area by James Davies who linked with Aaron Williams to release Mwandwe whose shot was saved by Ojrzynski.

The remainder of the half saw both sides enjoy spells of possession and posing a threat on the break though defences remained on top.

However the breakthrough arrived on the stroke of half-time with Caernarfon failing to clear a left wing cross from Callum Roberts for Mwandwe to link with Nick Rushton before drilling a low shot beyond Ojrzynski from 12 yards.

Newtown began the second-half with intent with the fleet-footed James Davies and Mwandwe stretching the visiting defence.

Chances came and went with Mwandwe and Aaron Williams spurning opportunities before Kieran Mills-Evans headed wide from Craig Willliams' right wing corner

Newtown were totally dominant and it only looked like a matter of time before the pressure would yield its rewards only for Ojrzynski to deny Davies from Mwandwe's low left wing cross.

Ruston fired wide from the edge of the area with 20 minutes remaining before Aaron Williams released Davies who fired over from 12 yards.

The missed chances ensured a nervous ending for the Robins as Caernarfon enjoyed their best spell of the game during the latter stages but a staunch defensive display resigned to the Canaries to feeding off scraps as Newtown celebrated going level on points with second placed Flint Town United.
