A CIDER maker from Herefordshire who uses a mill and press from the 1800s will feature in a Channel 5 farming series next week.

The family-run Gwatkin Cider, based in the Golden Valley, will be shown on This Week on the Farm next Wednesday at 8pm.

The show will be taking a break from its usual filming location of Cannonhall Farm in Yorkshire to move to Abbeydore in Herefordshire as the cameras arrive at Moorhampton Park Farm, the home of Gwatkin Cider.

Farming brothers Rob and Dave Nicholson from the show will be joining award-winning cider maker Denis Gwatkin.

They will harvest, scratter and press apples to make cider on vintage cidermaking equipment from the 19th century.

Managing director Denis Gwatkin said: "It was great to play host to Rob and Dave and to use our mill and press from the 1800s, making cider in the traditional way that we have always done on our farm.

"The old equipment is quite labour intensive so a glass or two of cider afterwards was needed!"

After a long day's work Rob and Dave ended up taking a little bit of Herefordshire back to their native Yorkshire in the form of their freshly-pressed apple juice to ferment into a jar of cider.

Moorhampton a working farm, so as well as keeping livestock, the family also own apple and pear orchards that supply them with the fruit needed to make cider and perry.

Set in the rolling hills of the Golden Valley, the farm shop stocks the entire range of 35 ciders and perries, subject to seasonal availability, along with a selection of local beers.

The farm also holds an annual musical festival, Down on the Farm, which returns in August 2022.
