A mid Wales Senedd Member has cancelled her regular weekend advice surgery following the death of Conservative MP David Amess.

Jane Dodds, Welsh Liberal Democrat MS for mid and west Wales, said her party would be suspending activities over the weekend as a "mark of respect."

Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, was stabbed multiple times at his constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex on Friday, October 15.

"In light of recent events, my planned advice surgeries this weekend will no longer take place and will be rearranged for future date," she said.

"I am utterly devastated to hear of the death of David Amess. This is a shameful act of violence that no public servant should face.

"My thoughts and prayers are with David's family, friends and colleagues at this horrendous time."

A 25-year-old man has been arrested by Metropolitan police on suspicion of murder.

Metropolitan police say they are treating the incident as a terrorist attack, although inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are continuing.

"The Welsh Liberal Democrats will suspend all campaigning activities this weekend as a mark of respect following the murder of Sir David Amess MP," she added.

"Sir David was killed offering help to constituents. It is the most important job we do and should be allowed to continue in safety.
