A mid Wales country inn welcomed a famous guest last week - as motoring TV presenter Richard Hammond dropped in for lunch.

Top Gear star Hammond, who lives on the Powys border in Ross On Wye, had been spotted numerous times in Montgomeryshire last week filming documentary footage.

And staff at the Nags Head Inn, situated in Garthmyl between Welshpool and Newtown, were delighted, and a little star struck, to welcome the Amazon Prime star for refreshments in-between takes on Friday, October 8.

"To say some of our staff members were star struck on Tuesday would be a very true statement," said a spokesperson for the venue.

"The one and only Richard Hammond come to visit us for a late lunch with his crew. It was a pleasure to serve one of TVs most popular presenters and we hope to see him again."

The former Top Gear presenter happily posed for photos with staff as he took in some mid Wales hospitality, the venue said.

He had been sighted numerous times in the area over the past week and is believed to be working on a project with south Wales based Cardiff Productions - although the company was keeping tight-lipped about the what they were working on when contacted by the County Times last week.

Earlier in the week he'd also been spotted shooting at the source of the Severn in the Pumlumon mountains near Llanidloes, and at Forden, near Welshpool, and later on at a filling station in Caersws, to the surprise of local petrol-heads.

"Didn’t expect to bump into Richard Hammond when going to get diesel from Caersws!" wrote one.
