More than 200 young farmers showed off their agricultural skills at the first in-person Montgomery YFC Field Day since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers said the event was a success and that it was "fantastic" to see members, friends and parents supporting the first county competition of the year.

Tregynon YFC was crowned the winner of the Field Day, which was held at Welshpool Livestock Sales on Sunday, October 3, followed by Dyffryn Tanat YFC in second place and Llanfyllin YFC earning third place.

Tregynon YFC was also the overall winner of the stock judging competitions, with Tudor Lewis (Tregynon) being awarded Senior Stockman of the Year and Holly Page (Sarn YFC) named Junior Stockman of the Year.

Elin Lewis, of Montgomery YFC, said: "Having our members and friends of the county back doing what they do best was such a wonderful sight after all the virtual competitions over the past two years, the only laptop in sight was the one adding up the scores."

From beef, dairy and pig stock judging to farm safety, pumpkin carving to auctioneering, young farmers from across north Powys showcased the very best skills the county can offer.

"The highlight of the day was certainly that 50 junior members competed in the fat lamb stock judging. For many this was their first ever Young Farmers' competition - just brilliant!," Elin added.

One member said "it feels like young farmers again" while another added that "it was great, I had so much fun socialising with all the members and seeing new faces".

"I loved my first YFC competition, Dad even got me a new pair of farm boots for it!" said another young farmer.
