A former BBC Young Musician of the Year is set to grace a Powys venue later this month.

Pianist Lara Melda is set to perform at Welshpool Methodist Church as the town's music club resumes it's annual concert season for the first time since the covid-19 pandemic brought down the curtain in 2019.

Organisers say the concert is set to be dedicated to the memory of the late Welshpool music teacher Joan Upton-Holder, who played such a major role in the music life of the area, and will take place on Thursday October 21 - with organisers warning a reduced capacity means tickets will be available on a 'first come, first served' basis.

"We will open our 79th Season with a concert by pianist Lara Melda, who will be playing works by Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev," said a spokesperson.

"Lara won the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2010, and after graduating from the Royal College of Music in 2016 has since gone on to build an exceptional international career, making her Wigmore Hall debut in 2017 and her Proms debut this summer.

"Lara has worked closely with her Alfred Brendel since 2017, and her first CD of music by Chopin was issued in 2020 to wide critical acclaim.

"Please be aware that these safety rules will limit the number of people we can accommodate, and although we very much hope we do not have to turn anyone away, tickets will be sold strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis. "

The event gets underway at 7.30pm in the Welshpool Methodist Church. Tickets will cost £12 (£5 for students) and will be available at the door on the night of the concert.

Organisers say that as legally required by the Welsh Government Covid safety rules, seating will be strictly socially-distanced and audience members will be required to wear masks throughout the concert.
