A plan to change a Montgomeryshire school to Welsh Medium education is set to go ahead - despite receiving 258 objections to the scheme.

In June, Powys County Council published a statutory notice on plans to change Ysgol Bro Hyddgen in Machynlleth from a 'dual-stream' school into a Welsh Medium education setting, giving people 28 days to register objections to the plan.

Ysgol Bro Hyddgen currently provides dual stream English and Welsh language education for pupils aged 4 to 18.

Now, the county council says the change will be recommended for approval when it goes before a cabinet meeting on October 12, as part of it's 'Strategy for Transforming Education 2020-2030', one of the aims of which is to improve access to Welsh-medium provision.

"Earlier this year, Cabinet gave the go-ahead for a statutory notice to be published formally proposing the change, which was published in June. During the statutory notice period, 258 objections were received," said a spokesperson.

"On Tuesday 12 October, Cabinet will receive and consider the objection report and will be asked to approve the proposal."

Powys County Council say the proposed change would be introduced on a phased basis starting with the school's reception class in September 2022.

They added that additional support would be provided for pupils including so-called immersion education units.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education, said: "Moving Ysgol Bro Hyddgen along the language continuum would help us meet the aims and objectives within our Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys.

"It would also ensure that all pupils attending the school have the opportunity to become fully bilingual, fluent in both Welsh and English, therefore contributing to the Welsh Government's aspiration to achieve a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

"It is important that Cabinet hears the views of those who have objected to the proposal and these will be carefully considered before any final decisions are made."
