A Welshpool High School student has bagged a top engineering scholarship after coming through a difficult selection process.

Brooke Selly, who is a sixth form student in Year 12 at Welshpool High School, has been awarded an Arkwright Scholarship, which is the most esteemed scholarship of its type in the UK, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as a future leader in engineering.

The Scholarships are awarded to hard-working 16 year old students through a rigorous selection process, supporting them through their A levels, or equivalent qualifications.

Every Scholarship is sponsored by a commercial company, trade association, university, professional institution, armed service, government organisation, worshipful company, charitable trust or personal donor. This means that support is offered in various different ways, for example, valuable hands-on work experience, support for their curriculum project and a personal mentor who can help them with aspects of their studies and career planning.

Brooke is being sponsored by The South Wales Institute of Engineers Educational Trust (SWIEET), who encourage and support school age students to gain engineering understanding and appreciation, and encourages students towards rewarding careers in engineering and the built environment

Brooke will also receive £600 personal financial award over the years of study, personal development, Industry-based Connect Days, University-based VIP Receptions, early notification of national competitions and a network with like-minded students.

Brooke hopes to continue her studies concentrating on software or mechanical engineering at university and hopes to go into the field of software engineering.
