A Powys beauty spot has been named the number one location in Wales in an unusual survey.

According to a survey by a leading insurance company. Lake Vyrnwy is the top spot to scatter a loved one's ashes following their death.

Researchers for Sun Life came up with a list of the most picturesque locations for scattering ashes by analysing a number of factors including tourist figures, average rainfall and accessibility.

The research found top ranking Lake Vyrnwy had some of the lowest tourist figures, the lowest precipitation, while also ranking high for its picturesque scenery, giving it the highest rank in the country.

In Scotland, Loch Lomond was the most popular while in England, Sandbanks in Dorset was named as the best location.

Ian Atkinson, director of marketing at SunLife said: "Looking for the right place to say goodbye to your loved ones can be really difficult.

"In a recent study we conducted we found that less than 1% of people know their loved ones’ funeral preferences and for many, this includes where they would like their ashes to be scattered.

"So we wanted to help those who are grieving to find the perfect places among the UK’s great natural beauty and scenic landscapes – whether that’s on the coast, in the mountains or in the countryside.

"Many people might not consider how popular somewhere is, its weather or accessibility, so whether you’re honouring someone’s last wishes or choosing a location yourself, we hope our research can help with finding the ideal spot to say goodbye."
