Celebrations are today being held to mark 20 years since the official opening of Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd in Newtown.

Pupils and staff at the town's first designated Welsh language school are celebrating two decades with parties, competitions, workshops and a few surprises along the way.

The school was officially opened on September 28, 2001 by Sioned Penllyn and the first headteacher Penri Roberts at its former home in Park Lane. The historic day was marked in a sun-basked cultural celebration of dancing and singing by pupils in the school grounds.

Headteacher Darryn Green said: "Under the leadership of both Penri Roberts and Sian Davies, the school has grown and flourished over the past two decades and we now see that the Welsh language is alive in the Severn Valley.

"From the cabins of the previous site to the amazing building in which we have the pleasure of calling our school.

"The message back then was the same as today - diolch! Thank you to parents for sending their children to full Welsh medium education. Thank you for giving your child the opportunity to grow and develop through the medium of Welsh.

"But most importantly, thanks to all past and current pupils, staff, governors for your hard work, energy and determination throughout the past 20 years."
