A group of Welshpool students got a few pointers from a professional adventurer - and some industry professionals - as they got a taste of what was to come in sixth form at an off-site induction day.

On Monday, September 13 the group of new sixth form students at Welshpool High School were joined at Cefn Lea, Dolfor, by Sean Conway, a Zimbabwean endurance adventurer, author and motivational speaker who became the first person to cycle, swim, and run the length of Great Britain, from Land's End to John O'Groats.

He also briefly held the record for the fastest, unsupported crossing of Europe by bicycle after successfully cycling nearly 4,000 miles in 24 days, 18 hours and 39 minutes.

Earlier in the day they heard presentations from staff about how to maximise their time in the Sixth Form before hearing from past students Carwyn Owen and Connor Phillips about their journey through the sixth form and beyond.

Top UK universities were present alongside Nidec – Control Techniques who came along to discuss future opportunities with the company.

"As well as the induction activities, students also had the opportunity to try their hand at Frisby Golf, Pitch and putt and more, not to mention a great lunch," said assistant head teacher Jamie Loxham.

"The day was completed with a fantastic presentation by Sean Conway, a professional ‘Adventurer’ who shared a positive message of resilience, effort and setting your sights high to gain the greatest benefit from each and every situation.

"The students enjoyed the day and we hope they feel motivated to continue with the next stage in their own personal journey, all with our continued support.

"Thank you for all those involved who helped to make this an enjoyable and worthwhile experience."
