NEWTOWN'S JD Welsh Cup adventure came to a grinding halt as Carmarthen Town staged an upset at Latham Park.

The Robins trailed inside the opening 90 seconds as Dion Phillips drilled home at the far post after Matthew Delaney's low left wing cross caught the home side napping.

The home side sought to stretch the JD Cymru South side but the Old Gold enjoyed some good fortune as Jamie Rowland's 25 yard shot came back off the inside of the post before the former Shrewsbury Town youngster forced goalkeeper Scott James into action.

Newtown toiled in vain for a route back into the game until Nick Rushton was impeded in the area by Greg Walters as Aaron Williams stepped up to level the tie from the penalty spot with 25 minutes remaining.

The Robins had chances to win the tie with Lufumpa Mwandwe heading over from close range and James Davies steering Ruhston's right cross wide while George Hughes was also denied by the woodwork as Carmarthen held out.

The shoot-out saw Rushton spurn his spot-kick as James produced the save as Carmarthen celebrated a 5-3 victory.

Penrhyncoch were also the victims of an upset in a penalty shoot-out defeat at Ardal North West League side Saltney Town.

The match ended 1-1 after Gwion Pugh-Jones' strike was cancelled out by Ryan McCleary before Saltney saw Scott Beach dismissed while Niall Coleridge saw red for the Roosters.

McCleary netted the decisive penalty in the shoot-out with Owain James and Taylor Watts unsuccessful from the spot as Saltney celebrated victory.

Meanwhile TNS did just enough to book their place in the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup with victory against Conwy Borough on Friday night.

Dean Ebbe’s 35th minute header was the difference between the two sides as Anthony Limbrick’s side navigated a tricky banana skin against lower level opposition.

Ebbe had the first chance of the match, forcing Conwy goalkeeper Rory Crowther into a save with nine minutes played.

Declan McManus fired wide just a minute later before the Scottish striker watched a powerful effort come back off the crossbar after 20 minutes.

TNS continued to knock on the door and Ebbe came agonisingly close to glancing in the opener five minutes later.

Crowther was again called into action in the 27th minute, pulling off a smart save to deny the dangerous McManus, before Corrig McGonigle sent Conwy’s best chance wide down the other end.

The opening goal finally arrived in the 35th minute as Ebbe climbed highest to head home Ryan Brobbel’s corner.

Following the restart, Brobbel again went close on a couple of occasions, with a cross from the left in the 61st minute, which almost crept into the far corner, the closest the number eight came to doubling the advantage.

However TNS could not put the game to bed and resulted in a nervous finale which saw Conwy’s Connor Davies almost snatch an equaliser with just seconds to go only to be denied by goalkeeper Connor Roberts as the Saints progressed.

Guilsfield booked their place in the last 16 out of the cup with a 4-2 win at Dinas Powys.

Robbie James starred with a double with Adam Jenkins and George Clifton goals sealing the Guils progress while Gareth Emanuel and Luke Birnage replied for the hosts.
