People across mid Wales are being urged to catch a glimpse of a world-class masterpiece before it leaves.

Jean-Siméon Chardin’s ‘The House of Cards’ is on display at the Oriel Davies Gallery in Newtown for the final time this weekend after an 11-week visit.

Chardin’s work has been shown in some of the world’s greatest galleries such as the National Gallery in London, Uffizi in Florence and the Louvre in Paris.

Steffan Jones‐Hughes, Director of Oriel Davies, said: “It’s a huge honour for us and huge for Newtown because the chances of you seeing a Chardin in Newtown are so remote.

“It’s like bringing a really big name in terms of art history to mid Wales.”

The oil painting of a young boy sitting at a table playing cards has been on display inside the town centre gallery as part of the National Gallery’s Masterpiece Tour around the country. The partnership with the National Gallery means that Oriel Davies will borrow a different major art piece which will be brought from London to Newtown every year.

Also inside the gallery is a set of 15,000 cards which has been completed by contributions from communities in the local area. ‘Building a Future’ is part of a collaboration with Cardiff -based artist Alyn Smith and the gallery.

Chardin’s ‘The House of Cards’ and ‘Building a Future’ are on display until 5pm on Sunday (September 26). Entry is free.

The picture will next visit the Beacon Museum in Cumbria from October 1.
