Free Wifi access could be coming to a north Powys town under plans set to be discussed later this month.

The 'Smart Towns' scheme would see wireless internet points installed across Llanfair Caereinion allowing residents and visitors in the area free access to the internet.

The plan, which is set to be discussed by Llanfair Caereinion Town Council at a full council meeting on September 27, would see at least 8 wireless access routers installed at various locations within the town centre area from the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway station on Pool Road up to Mount Field.

The system would be delivered in partnership with Powys County Council and would mirror a similar set up already installed in Llandrindod Wells.

A report set to be discussed by the council says the equipment would be installed free of charge to Llanfair Caereinion town council, and would be maintained for free for the next ten years.

"Earlier in August the Town Clerk was approached by Powys County Council to see if the Town would be interested free WiFi for its centre. A meeting was set up to find out more about the project for towns in Powys," the report reads.

"In the areas served by the routers there would be free WiFi, some homes would also benefit if they were within the range of the routers.

"The initial area covered by free WiFi would be from the WLLR steam railway station to the entrance to Goat Field and up to Mount Field. This can be extended over time."

Data collected by the system would also provide valuable information to businesses about footfall in the town, the report says, and adds that if the plan was approved, the system could be up and running as early as next spring.

The Wifi plans have been recommended for approval, and will be discussed by Llanfair Caereinion Town council later this month.
