Llanidloes High School has asked all pupils to wear face masks during lessons following a rise in coronavirus cases.

Students have been told that they must wear face coverings inside classrooms amid an increase in people testing positive for the virus.

Headteacher Daniel Owen said: "In response to a rise in Covid cases, we are temporarily re-introducing face coverings in lessons. Thank you for your ongoing support."

Latest Welsh Government guidance for secondary schools states that face coverings are not routinely recommended however they should be worn around indoor communal areas when the risk level is high.

Powys County Councillor Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: “Coronavirus has not gone away so it is important that that we do everything that we can to Keep Powys Safe.

"However, if any pupil develops one of the three main symptoms of Covid-19 (a new continuous cough, a high temperature, loss of or change to sense of smell or taste) parents should follow the Welsh Government’s self-isolation guidance and apply for a coronavirus test.”

Confirmed coronavirus cases in the Llanidloes area (20) were one of the lowest in Powys when pupils returned to school (seven days up to September 5), according to Public Health Wales.
