Motorists in Powys have been reminded about potential disruption caused by large wind turbines being moved through the county this month.

Last week saw the start of daily convoys set to continue throughout October which will see six large wind turbines transported from Ellesmere Port to Hendy Wind Farm near Llandegley.

Motorists have been warned by police to "Plan ahead & expect delays".

Powys Roads Police Unit reported that the components for today's convoy left Ellesmere Port at around 9.45am, with the convoy expected to reach Newtown around 12pm.

The route will take the turbines down the A483 from Oswestry, through Llanymynech, Welshpool and Newtown before continuing on through Llanidloes, Rhayader and Crossgates before arriving on site later in the afternoon.

A spokesperson for Powys RPU said motorists are being advised to be aware of, and where possible avoid, the route to prevent getting caught in delays.

"The route is A483, A5, A483, A489, A470, A4081, A483 and A44 to the Hendy Wind Farm site," they said.

Rough times for each leg of the journey, which police say are subject to "multiple factors that could delay or change them", are:

1.           Leave Wrexham A483 at 0930 – 1030

2.           Arrive at Welshpool at 1100 - 1200

3.           Arrive at Newtown at 1200 - 1300

4.           Arrive at Rhayader A470 at 1345 - 1445

5.           Arrive at Llandrindod Wells at 1430 - 1530

6.           Arrive at site A44 at 1500 – 1600

Brecon RPU Sgt Matthew Thomas said: “The convoys are scheduled to be completed on Tuesday the 28th of Sept 2021, however the 29th of September to 1st of October are contingency days in case the delivery schedule runs over.

“The police escort team are doing everything they can to minimise the disruption to the roads and local communities.  We thank them for their continued patience and understanding. It is our intention to give regular daily updates on the @powysrpu twitter page.”

A spokesman for windfarm developers Njord Energy said: "Abnormal loads transporting sections of the wind turbines will be operating on the A483, A489 and A470 between Llanymynech and Doldowlod, on the A4081 between Doldowlod and Llandrindod Wells and on the A483 and A44 between Llandrindod Wells and Llandegley between Tuesday 31st August and 1st October 2021.

"During this period, lorries will be transporting wind turbine loads on weekdays under Police escort. Careful traffic management measures have been developed in association with the Welsh Government, NMWTRA, the Police and the turbine hauliers to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum along the route.

"In anticipation of this work, Hendy Wind Farm Limited would like to thank people in Powys in advance for their co-operation.
