Lorries will be carrying large wind turbine components from north-west England to mid Wales for the next four weeks.

Drivers have been told to plan ahead and expect disruption while abnormal loads transport sections of wind turbines to the Hendy Wind Farm near Llandrindod Wells.

Dyfed-Powys Police will escort one convoy every weekday between 9.30am to 5pm until October 1.

Wind farm owner Njord Energy said it would like to thank people for their co-operation.

The loads will make the journey (map shown below) from Ellesmere Port then along the A483 to Newtown Bypass, the A470 in Llangurig and towards the A44 at Crossgates.

Dyfed-Powys Police's Road's Policing Unit is live tweeting the journey between Monday and Friday.

Transportation timetable

Rough times for each leg of the journey which police say are subject to "multiple factors that could delay or change them":

  • Leave Wrexham A483 between 9.30am and 10.30am
  • Arrive at Welshpool between 11am and noon

The construction of the 150-hectare Hendy Wind Farm, located near the village of Penybont, is expected to take up to 40 weeks. Njord Energy said the wind farm will provide enough power annually to fuel 9,800 homes.

A spokesman for Njord Energy said: "Abnormal loads transporting sections of the wind turbines will be operating on the A483, A489 and A470 between Llanymynech and Doldowlod, on the A4081 between Doldowlod and Llandrindod Wells and on the A483 and A44 between Llandrindod Wells and Llandegley between Tuesday 31st August and 1st October 2021.

"During this period, lorries will be transporting wind turbine loads on weekdays under Police escort. Careful traffic management measures have been developed in association with the Welsh Government, NMWTRA, the Police and the turbine hauliers to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum along the route.

"In anticipation of this work, Hendy Wind Farm Limited would like to thank people in Powys in advance for their co-operation.
