A silver birch tree for every veteran named on the Llanidloes and District war memorial have been dedicated during a special event to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The trees were planted at Llanidloes Golf Club in 2019 however the dedication service was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic last year.

Llanidloes Women's Section of the Royal British Legion were joined by Reverend Alison Gwalchmai and Reverend John Davies, and Mark Gore of Welshpool and District Royal British Legion (RBL) on Monday, July 19.

During the service a plaque was unveiled by President Pat Thomas after guests were welcomed and a poem and eulogy were read by members of the Women's Section.

The Last Post and Reveille was played on the saxophone by Stephen Killigrew followed by the ‘Act of Homage’ by the Standard Bearer Trudy Davies.

Refreshments were held at the Club House and included guests such as Llanidloes Mayor Janet Crisp and Powys County Councillor Gareth Morgan.

Trudy Davies said: "Our thanks to Viv Williams and Mrs Benbow for all your help serving the refreshments.

"Thank you to everyone at Llanidloes Golf Club, both the Committee and Members for their support and assistance in planting the silver birches back in 2019. Special mention of Phil Benbow for all he has done since 2019.

"Our thanks also go to all who helped towards this event ‘behind the scenes’, without you it would not have been achieved. You all lived up to the RBL Motto - ‘Service Not Self’."
