A plan to build four "cloud house" holiday homes on a wind farm near Machynlleth has been withdrawn.

Plans were submitted earlier this year for the four self-catering holiday units, which were to be partly built into a hillside on farmland, as part of a diversification project at Brynmeurig Farm near Cemmaes.

If completed, it would give visitors views across Cadair Idris and the Dyfi Valley to the sea from the southeast side of Moel Eiddew.

However the scheme was withdrawn this week following feedback from heritage organisation Cadw.

"Having carefully considered the information provided with this planning application, we consider that it is inadequately documented," they said, in a response dated June 29.

"The application area is located some 310m north of scheduled monument MG312 Moel Eiddew platform cairn and changes to the views from the cairn and an increase in noise levels caused by users of the cloud houses could have an adverse impact on the setting of the scheduled monument," they added.

Responses from Powys County Council's environmental health department had also noted that noise levels from the development may impact on Cemmaes Wind Farm, which has a noise condition included in its planning consent.

However, prior to being withdrawn the scheme had attracted support from the community council.

An earlier proposal for five units was also submitted then withdrawn in 2020.

In a design statement submitted along with the planning application in May, applicant Mr Peter Canham said that he already worked with the family at Brynmeurig on a tree house holiday project that has been operating for nearly a decade.

Mr Canham said: "It is intended that this proposal will further advance Brynmeurig Farm in diversification.

"As well as bringing extra income into the farm the ‘treehouse’ project has brought many visitors to the area who directly affect the local economy by visiting the local pub, Penrhos Arms, newly opened local shop and café as well as local towns and tourist attractions.

"The proposed Cloud House project will hopefully increase this influence and bring further growth to the area.”
