One of Newtown’s primary schools has shut its gates for the last time before it reopens as a new merged school in September.

Hafren Junior School closed on the final day of the school term on Friday, July 16, which headteacher Carl Hyde described as a “date that will go down in history”.

The junior school and Ladywell Green Infants School will merge as Ysgol Calon y Dderwen in the new term in September.

Mr Hyde, who will be the first headteacher of the new school, wrote a tribute thanking pupils, parents, staff and governors past and present for their support. He said: “The next time our gates will open for all children, we will be opening as Calon y Dderwen, and we are all incredibly excited for this.

“Being head at Hafren and working for your children is a privilege I am truly honoured to hold. I have followed in the footsteps of some inspirational head teachers, worked with some incredible staff, all of whom hold their position with the high expectations and standards.

“I'd also like to thank our Governors for their support. Under the guidance of our Chair of Governors, Neil Ainsworth, they have challenged us to reach the highest heights and through these high expectations we create ambitions for only accepting the very best for our children.

“I, and all the staff, wish you a very happy summer holidays, take care and stay safe. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday September 2nd 2021 at Ysgol Calon y Dderwen.”
