SUSPISCIOUS fishmongers managed to give police the slip last week after several reports were made to authorities in a north Powys town.

Something fishy was going on in the Llanfair Caereinion area on Thursday, July 15, when local residents reported multiple incidents of suspicious characters going door to door selling fish.

A post on the Llanfair Caereinion Town Community Facebook page reported of two men wearing branded t-shirts going to residential properties in the Montgomeryshire town selling various products.

The men were reported when one resident conducted an internet search and was unable to find any businesses registered under that name in the UK – but discovered Google posts linking the business to suspected dog thefts.

Jasmine Williams-Griffiths posted on the site: “Two men going around knocking on houses asking if anyone wants fresh fish.

“Google doesn’t show any business under the name and lots of posts on google linking it to dog thefts in other parts of the UK. Be vigilant and keep a close eye on your property for markings. Police informed and state they’ll be patrolling the area.”

Rosemary Plume replied, saying the men were believed to be driving a small white Citroen van, which had been reported to police.

A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police said: “We received three reports of men selling fish from a van in the Llanfair Caereinion and Powys areas on Thursday, July 15.

“Officers attended and have investigated the matter, however, the males, who had been described as wearing white coats, had left the area.

“As there was no reported criminal activity the matter has been closed.”
