Llanfair Caereinion residents are set to benefit from a new defibrillator in the town.
Llanfair Town Council has approved a scheme for the telephone box at the top of Watergate Street which involves a full refurbishment, in its traditional red colour, and the installation of the live-saving equipment.
The famous Gilbert Scott designed 'Jubilee kiosk' was launched in 1936 to celebrate King George V’s silver jubilee. By the 1960’s almost 70,000 kiosks could be found across the countryside, but with the adoption of mobile telephony, many have fallen out of use or have been repurposed.
A BT scheme to allow local authorities to adopt a phone box for just £1 was launched last year, enabling hundreds to be converted for alternative uses.
The works are part of town council plans to ensure the whole town area is adequately covered by defibrillators, they say.
The refurbishment and installation of the equipment is likely to take around 8 weeks.
