Retiring Newtown headteacher says it's been 36 'amazing' years in education

For the past 16 years, Sian Davies has been the headteacher of Newtown's Welsh-medium primary school, Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd, which she described as an "immense privilege".

She oversaw the school's big move from Park Street to the new building next to Newtown High School following a long campaign for a designated Welsh primary school in Powys' largest town.

Mrs Davies' leaving gift to the school was a song that she had written and composed especially for the occasion called "Gyda Chariad" (With Love) and it was performed this week by the whole school.

She said: "It has been an absolute pleasure teaching so many children over 36 years. Firstly, at Ysgol Hafren, then Yr Uned Gymraeg (the Welsh Unit) and currently at Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd.

"It has also been an immense privilege to have been a Headteacher at Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd for 16 years.

"I am extremely proud of each pupil and seeing each child grow through the medium of Welsh. My thanks to all – past and present- pupils, staff, governors and parents for making my career such an amazing and blessed experience. Diolch yn fawr iawn."

Mrs Davies is confident she is leaving the school in safe hands with her successor and former pupil, Darryn Green, taking the helm as the school celebrates its 20th year in September.
