A Welshpool head teacher who has been in post for over a decade will ring the final bell on his teaching career this week.

Staff and pupils at Welshpool High School are set to bid a fond farewell to Jim Toal, who will retire during the summer, 2021.

Mr Toal, who took over the post in Welshpool in 2007, expressed his pride in his students, and said it had been an "honour" to serve the community of Welshpool.

"I leave my position extremely proud of the achievements of the many students who have attended the school during my time as head teacher," he said.

"I am grateful for their dedication in all areas of endeavour, and for their contribution to making the school such a positive and successful learning environment.

"The teaching and support staff have shown great professionalism and commitment in carrying out their duties to ensure the students at Welshpool High School receive the best possible provision and care. The staff have worked tirelessly to achieve our quest for excellence in all areas, and it has been a pleasure to lead such a loyal and talented team.

"Headship, of course, comes with a high level of responsibility and associated challenges, but ultimately there is no greater privilege than be in a position to help educate and influence future generations.

As part of his farewell, Mr Toal added his thanks to everybody associated with the school, past and present and said he wished "nothing but the best for the school and for the community of Welshpool", which he said it had been an honour to serve.

"I would like to thank the school governors for their dedication and unswerving support in helping steer the school forward, and to all the parents and carers who have supported the school," he added.

"The school is in a strong position, enjoying a very positive reputation in the wider community, and I am delighted to leave its leadership in the very capable hands of Mr. Kinsey as acting headteacher."

Dr David Rogers, Chair Welshpool High School Governors said Mr Toal had helped to shape the school into a successful school with "high values".

"After so many years as Headteacher his experienced guidance and broad perspectives will be greatly missed," he said.

"Governors have long held that Jim’s passion for a strong and caring pastoral ethos has grown deep roots with staff and pupils alike, making Welshpool High what it is today: a successful school with high values, a school to be proud of. A long and happy retirement is fully deserved."
