A Newtown woman has been given a community order for assaulting a police officer.

Danniella Nicole Davies admitted the offence when she appeared at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 6.

The court heard that at around 5.30am on March 5 in Newtown, the 25-year-old was “aggressive” towards police officers and was swearing and shouting “are you going to arrest me?”.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, said Davies swung her arms which then caught an officer’s lip. She was then physically restrained and placed in handcuffs.

During a police interview, Davies told officers that she was “really drunk and upset” and apologised for what had happened.

Paul Inns, defending, told the court that Davies had phoned the police after another woman was “aggressive and causing problems” and felt that she had no option but to call the police.

“Ten minutes later she went downstairs to find out that police had arrested her partner. She was shocked and went into panic mode," Mr Inns said.

“She tried to find out from officers what had happened and, in her own words, freaked out. She knows she shouldn't have done so."

Magistrates heard that the officer did not sustain injuries in the incident.

Stephen Pembroke, chair of the magistrates' bench, told Davies: “You need to understand that you can’t do this on a regular basis. What we are going to do is give compensation to the police officer.”

Davies, of Heol Rhedyn, was given a 12-month community order which included 15 rehabilitation days. She was also made to pay £50 compensation, along with £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
