A Machynlleth singer songwriter has released a set of lockdown-recorded songs inspired by the town.

Mim Davies says she set out to record a set of songs during the Covid19 pandemic while unable to play live due to the Coronavirus restrictions.

Now, her efforts have resulted in the four track EP, "Built on a floodplain", released last month.

"The EP title is a reference to Machynlleth’s tendency to flood," she said.

"It also alludes to the feeling of trying to create something solid on unstable ground."

Like many musicians in this period of social distancing, Mim recently took to the internet to launch the EP, using Zoom to live stream a gig from her living room in Machynlleth to around 80 audience members.

People in Greece, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Czech Republic, Portugal and Italy tuned in for the performance, as well as from places closer to home, such as Aberystwyth, Penegoes, Abercegir, Derwenlas and Pennal, she says.

"I’ve written my best ever songs in the Dyfi Valley, " she added.

"I’m deeply affected by the people and landscapes that I’ve made a life with here. I used to think songwriting involved pulling something out of the air and giving it a shape, like a strange weightless sculpture. I feel like I pulled these songs out of the water in the Dyfi."

The EP is now available on Spotify and all other major online music platforms, and a CD version can be ordered at mimdavies.com/music
