A brand new supermarket is set to open in Newtown later this month.

Aldi says its new Pool Lane store will open on Thursday, July 22 at 8am, creating 18 new jobs in the town.

The discount food retailer, now Britain’s fifth largest supermarket with over 900 stores and around 38,000 employees, got the green light from Powys County Council planners for the development in August 2020.

The store has been built on the site of the former Greenhous Ford car dealership, which had been vacant prior to Aldi's purchase of the property.

The new store is the fourth Aldi to open in Powys, joining others in Welshpool, Llandrindod Wells and Brecon and is part of the supermarket's long-term target to reach 1,200 stores in the UK by 2025.

"As part of Aldi’s investment in local communities across the UK, the store will bring 18 new job opportunities to the area and offer more customers access to Aldi’s high quality, low-price products," said a spokesperson.

"The new store will offer fresh, Welsh meat products with weekly offers, Aldi’s award-winning ‘Specially Selected’ range - which was recently voted ‘Favourite Premium Supermarket Range’ by readers of Good Housekeeping magazine for the second year running - exclusive Beers, Wines and Spirits, and a ‘Food to Go’ section at the front of the store. Aldi’s legendary Specialbuys will also be available in the middle aisle, every Thursday and Sunday, offering extraordinary value on a wide range of products, from electrical items to garden tools. "

The new 1,332 square metre store, which includes more than 100 car parking spaces, is the first Aldi store in the area and will be run by Manager Karl Beck, along with a team of 25 colleagues from the local community.

Aldi Store Manager Karl Beck said: "We’re really looking forward to opening the first Aldi store here in Newtown. It’s set to be a great day and it’ll be lovely to welcome our new customers into the store and provide them with access to affordable, high quality food.”

Additionally, the new Aldi store is calling on local charities and food banks in Newtown to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community.

Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, up to five days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner up with the new Aldi store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.
