A councillor has quashed rumours that planters in Newtown town centre "turned up out of the blue" without the consent of local businesses.

Cllr Joy Jones said every Broad Street and High Street business that has a planter in front of their premises requested the flower displays.

"There have been a lot of rumours about the planters on the High Street and Broad Street," she told councillors at Monday's full council meeting.

"Apparently there have been rumours that they have turned up out of the blue and nobody knew about them and that businesses didn't want them.

"It's actually put there with their consent. We've seen people using them in the good weather with tables and chairs and it's made quite a difference to those businesses."

Cllr Jones added: "I know they have not been looking their best, but Rotary have been in touch and they are willing to do some maintenance and look after them. That will help a lot and hopefully we will much more colour and looking a lot better."

People in Newtown are being urged to take part in a survey and share their views on temporary measures for social distancing that were put in place, such as parking and planters, to provide outdoor space for shoppers and pedestrians to social distance as they walk along pavements.
