TRIBUTES have poured in for a popular motorcyclist who died in an accident just outside Builth Wells last week.

Riaz Majothi, referred to on social media by one friend this week as “Superman”, died in the one vehicle crash on the B4520 road between Upper Chapel and Builth at around 2pm on bank holiday Monday, May 31.

The 36-year-old, from Beddau, Rhondda Cynon Taf, was a popular member of the town’s rugby club, who described him as a “great character” this week, while one tribute even came from renowned Welsh international rugby referee Nigel Owens, who said he was “a wonderful person”.

Mr Majothi’s funeral was held on Friday, June 4, at the South Wales Islamic Centre in Butetown, Cardiff, and he was buried at Western Cemetery in Ely.

In a statement released on their Twitter page the day after his death, Beddau RFC chairman Mal Davies said: “Yesterday we heard the devastating news of the tragic death of one of our greatest characters, Riaz Majothi.

“Riaz was loved by all who had the privilege to know him. A true gentleman who will be missed by our club as well as our community as a caring person who had time for everyone, young and old.

“Respected by the whole rugby community as seen by the many tributes paid on social media since news broke of his passing.

“Our club will miss him dearly and our love goes out to his family, friends and everybody who will have been touched by this sad news. RIPZ Riaz.”

In a further post on the day of his funeral, the club added: “Your essence will remain long after you leave the village today to make your final journey. Rest in peace our friend.”

Owens wrote on Twitter: “So sorry to hear this sad news. He was a wonderful person. RIP.”

Friend Craig Hughes referred to Mr Majothi as “Superman”.

He said: “Riaz Majothi.... absolute legend... one of the best.... thoughts are with family and friends.... Superman was a class act.”

Richie Jones added: “Can’t believe the news today that we have lost Riaz Majothi. I’m absolutely gutted.

“I’ve only known this guy for a few years and it’s like we’ve been mates for 20 years. That’s the kind of guy he was, he touched your heart as soon as he met you. Rest in peace my friend, I’ll miss you.”

Emergency services attended the scene where Mr Majothi, riding a KTM Duke motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Dyfed Powys Police said the next of kin had been advised and were being supported by officers.

Police appealed to witnesses of the collision or anyone with information that could help officers with the investigation to get in touch. They are asked to report it online, by emailing 101@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk or calling 101.

The road was closed with diversions in place and reopened at 9pm on Monday night.
