Dyfed Powys Police say they will be maintaining a 'visible presence' in the town in an effort to curb a recent surge in vandalism.

In two separate incidents on Thursday, May 27, four cars were vandalised on the forecourt at HG Ballard and Sons garage, and school gardens were trashed at nearby Red Bank at Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng.

Coco's Coffee Shop on Broad Street has also been the target of vandalism, with windows smashed overnight on May 30.

The spate of criminal damage in Welshpool is believed to be 'alcohol related', police have said, but say added that there is no evidence of a link between the incidents.

"With the easing of the lockdown, Welshpool town, like many others, has seen an increase in alcohol related incidents such as anti-social behaviour and criminal damage," a spokesperson said.

"There is no evidence to link last weekends’ criminal damage incidents, which are believed to be alcohol related, however we are keeping an open mind."

The most serious incident last weekend saw one car with it's roof caved in, while others had wing mirrors and aerials snapped off at the HG Ballard and Sons dealership.

Police have reminded the public that people should enjoy themselves responsibly over the coming weekend.

"We want to see people enjoying themselves however we need to ensure that this is done safely for all," they added.

"We would simply ask that people enjoy themselves in a way that does not impact negatively on others.

"Officers will be maintaining a visible presence and will be engaging with the public and utilising enforcement powers to deal with those acting in an anti-social manner if required."
