Montgomeryshire Senedd Member(MS) Russell George has urged the government to relax Covid restrictions this week.

With the Welsh Government due to undertake a review into the current situation on Friday, June 4, Mr George, who is also the Shadow Minister for Health, believes Wales should downgrade it's Covid-19 alert level to level one, the lowest category of restrictions.

Wales has recorded zero Covid-19 related deaths for the past 8 days, and new cases are now down to their lowest levels since the beginning of the 'second-wave' of the pandemic.

A relaxation of the rules would see people allowed to meet with others indoors, and greater numbers allowed at larger events such as weddings and funerals, as well as event venues and conferences.

"I very much welcome that Wales moved to Alert Level 2 last month," said Mr George in a statement.

"As a result of a successful UK vaccination programme, this has meant we can see the further reopening of our society and economy.

"I very much hope that the Welsh Government will move to alert level 1. If we do, alert level 1 will mean that nightclubs and adult entertainment venues would remain closed but the vast majority of venues will be permitted to open under relaxed restrictions. "

The Covid-19 case rate in Wales is currently 7.5 per 100,000 population over seven days, with Conwy remaining as the highest case rate in Wales on 22.2 cases per 100,000 population following an outbreak of the so-called "indian variant".

Second highest is Wrexham with a case rate of 14.7, followed by Denbighshire with a case rate of 11.5.

The rate in Powys is currently 3.8 per 100,000.
