A CHARITY-run canal boat service in Welshpool is encouraging people of all ages to book a trip to enjoy the local scenery.

The Heulwen Trust, which owns and operates two 70-foot narrow boats on the Montgomery Canal, provides free canal boat trips for vulnerable and disabled members of the community.

In its 40-year history, trips have traditionally been targeted at disabled groups, but the trust realises the effects of stress on all who have endured their enforced lockdown and loss of freedom and is concerned to extend its welcome to those it can assist.

Its trips have always been limited to a maximum of 12 passengers, but this can be further reduced where appropriate.

Both boats have open fronts and spacious airy cabins.

Boat trips can be booked via email at info@heulwentrust.co.uk or by contacting trust chairman, David Corfield on 07885 484228.

The Trust recently received a donation of £5,000 from the now closed Ann Hollaway Residents Day Centre.

It hopes to provide trips for the former residents and others in a similar situation.

A spokesman for Heulwen Trust said: “To assist such special groups the trust is considering the purchase or hire of a mini bus to make these possible and welcomes any opportunity to resume its trips for any less able and their family members.”
